TGT’s Volunteer of the Month for February: Mary Curl
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TGT VOLUNTEER?
Since October of 2015.
WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
Having just moved back to Plainfield, I was seeking a volunteer opportunity in Plainfield. I did a web search and The Gathering Together was the first listing to pop up! I remembered reading an article about the Gathering Together years earlier before I left Plainfield, so I called and spoke with Rita. She invited me to stop by to meet her and talk. Her friendly welcoming demeanor and willingness to work with me to find the right volunteer activities for me reeled me in. Then I met Abigail and Charlie and Joan and so many other wonderful people that I was convinced this would become the family-like community I was seeking.
WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
The opportunity to work within a community of people I enjoy in support of a mission I believe in.
DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE OR MOST MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER.
I have enjoyed each new experience from serving as a companion to guests and families, to laughter up in the craft room as we worked together on creating holiday garlands, to helping organize and carry out a successful event, to working with Rita at her dining room table “office”, meeting friends new and old, and the list goes on!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COMING TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
The people I meet.
WHAT BACKGROUND OR LIFE EXPERIENCE HAS BEST PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
I like that I didn’t need a special skill to be able to contribute.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
Come spend some time with us. Try a variety of activities and see what feels right for you. Be willing to offer your ideas and suggestions. Set your own limits – spending as much or as little time with us as your interests and schedule permit. We will enjoy getting to know you.
