November Volunteers of the Month

The Gathering Together is pleased to announce their Volunteer of the Month Program. Honored volunteers will be featured on the website Volunteers Tab with their picture and their ‘story’. At the end of each year, the Gathering Together Board of Directors will celebrate all twelve  of the year’s selected volunteers  with a special gathering in their honor.

Please consider nominating your favorite volunteer for this honor. The form and submission details can be found on our website at http://thegatheringtogether.org/volunteer-of-the-month/.

TGT’s Volunteer of the Month for November: Bob & Darlene Williams

RN Darlene has been a companion for TGT for the past year, filling in at the most crucial times and unusual hours. One day she was here at 6:30am! She has branched out to Event volunteering and has also enrolled her husband, Bob, to help. Bob, a marble artisan, has saved our sink from sinking, installed our memorial tiles and is now making the beautiful and precious cheese boards that are in such demand at our events. They are a fun and giving couple.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TGT VOLUNTEER?
We have been volunteering for a little over a year.

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
I wanted to give back to the community and having the opportunity to help provide end-of-life care so close to my home  just seemed meant to be.

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
The people.  The patients.  Because I enjoy it, I drag Bob along with me.

DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE OR MOST MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER.
Being a companion.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COMING TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
It’s so easy to get work done there.  I enjoy working with Rita and the other volunteers doing whatever sewing project needs to be done.

WHAT BACKGROUND OR LIFE EXPERIENCE HAS BEST PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
I’ve been a bedside RN for 40 years;  10 of those years have been in hospice care.  I find it so rewarding.  The need is there and I want to fulfill it.  Bob likes to make things and he likes to be needed.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
Don’t hesitate.  Stop by and talk with Rita.  There are so many things that are needed.  There is something for everyone.
