TGT’s Volunteer of the Month for March: Debbie Sutton
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TGT VOLUNTEER?
I am not exactly sure when I started volunteering at TGT but around 5-6 years ago. When I was getting ready to retire I made a to-do list and working at TGT was on that list. I did some volunteering while still working but then my husband’s health got worse and I was dealing with him and the hard decision to move him to memory care. I started volunteering more consistently at TGT this past year or so.
WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
I loved the idea of being able to learn new crafts and being able to donate crafts I have made for TGT fund raisers. My family, friends and teachers have received so many gifts that I learned to make at the craft classes at TGT.
WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
Getting to know other volunteers who make it fun and enjoyable to keep going back.
DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE OR MOST MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER.
Like I mentioned before I have learned how to do so many crafts and I am able to make special gifts for family, friends and teachers. Giving homemade gifts is so much more fun and hopefully meaningful to the recipient.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COMING TO THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
The people I meet and the feeling of being a little help for a great cause.
WHAT BACKGROUND OR LIFE EXPERIENCE HAS BEST PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
I think my dad taught me to help others and I loved his spirit of helping his neighbors. I want to do the same thing for my family, friends and neighbors.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE GATHERING TOGETHER?
Please give it a try. You will receive so much joy by volunteering in any capacity. There are so many opportunities there, not just crafting.
